What Do You Need to Know About GigE/Gigabit Ethernet?

“Gigabit ethernet”… It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie.  However, this technology is something you can take advantage of today, in real life!

Before you do, though, here’s what you need to know about it:

-  It’s really, really fast

Gigabit ethernet transmits data at 1 Gbps to up to 10 Gbps.  1 Gbps comes out to 1,000 Mbps, meaning that these GigE connections are about 1,000 times faster than a T1 line.

If all of that blinding speed STILL isn’t fast enough for you, there’s a newer version of gigabit ethernet that’s called 10-Gigabit Ethernet.  As the name implies, it’s ten times faster than a traditional gigabit connection.

-  It can use fiber and twisted pair copper cable

This is a big plus, because before gigabit Ethernet was officially introduced, most people thought that it would require a fiber connection.  Instead, it can also transmit a signal through four pairs of copper cable.  That makes it far cheaper than having to get a fiber line up and running.

If you’ve already got old pairs of copper cable running into your office building, you may need to replace them.  However, that costs a lot less than outfitting your office with fiber!

-  It can provide backwards compatibility

That’s really just a fancy way of saying that you can boost your existing 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps equipment to meet gigabit standards.  As a result, it will be much easier and cheaper for you to get this technology up and running.

-  It may be able to use your existing router

If you have a lesser-quality router, it may not be able to process a gigabit ethernet connection’s full speed.  If that’s the case, you’ll need to either buy a new router or have a gigabit switch installed on your old router.

If you’ve got a good router right now, you may be able to use it for your gigabit connection, without changing a thing!

-  It gets rid of interference

Thanks to its speed, you’ll never have to worry about static or your connection cutting in and out.  So, when you have gigabit ethernet, your audio and video streams will be crystal clear – meaning that video conferences and teleconferences are a legitimate option.  In the end, you may be able to save a ton of money on travel expenses, all because of your gigabit connection!

-  It can scale throughout your network

With this technology, you can have 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps at your desk, which becomes 1,000 Mbps in your data center.  That way, you won’t have to learn how to use a bunch of new equipment.  Instead, all you’ll have to do is plug your existing ethernet LAN into a new gigabit Ethernet backbone.  In the end, you’ll be doing the same things you’ve always done at your desk – just faster!
