“Dark fiber providers” – it sounds like some kind of summer action movie! While it may not be quite as exciting as a big-screen blockbuster, working with one of these providers can work wonders for your business.
First things first, though. What exactly IS a dark fiber provider?
“Dark fiber” is fiber cable that was laid during the dot com boom of the late 1990’s. However, when the bubble burst, there wasn’t a need for all of it. Today, it’s all dark – meaning that it’s not active (or “lit”). As a result, you can buy it at wholesale prices. The only catch is that you’re responsible for making it active, which is a whole lot tougher than just calling a provider and getting access to their “lit” fiber!
So, what can you get out of working with dark fiber providers – as opposed to doing things the ol’ fashioned way?
You’ll be able to get unique extras
Because dark fiber providers took a non-traditional route themselves, they’re much more willing to work with you to build a non-traditional network of your own. In fact, many of them offer what they call a “boutique” approach, instead of the one-size-fits-all service that many of the traditional providers offer.
You’ll work with the same faces from start to finish
Dark fiber providers literally build their networks from the ground up. As a result, they take a lot of pride in making sure that you get the very best finished product. That means they’re a lot less likely to outsource work than the “other guys” are.
You’ll be able to get unlimited Bandwidth
Traditional providers offer a lot of options when it comes to bandwidth, but very few of them offer an “unlimited” option. But because there’s such a glut of dark fiber, there’s no limit to what your network can have!
And, because it’s so much more affordable to get dark fiber than getting it the ol’ fashioned way, you can get more bang for your buck by working with dark fiber providers. As a result, you’ll be able to afford as much Bandwidth as you want!
You’ll get the “traditional” perks
There are some things about traditional fiber providers that are pretty great – like the protection of a Service Level Agreement (SLA) and Quality of Service (QoS). Dark fiber providers will give you both of these things. That way, you’ll get to take advantage of the traditional things that you like, without having to deal with the traditional constraints and inconveniences that you don’t like!
